In the Community
Community driven.
Serving the community we live in makes life better for all of us.
Duncaster is a not-for-profit Lifecare retirement community, founded in 1984 as the Hartford region’s first Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC). Duncaster has a strong commitment to making the greater community a better place to live. Residents and staff give their time and support to a significant number of community service projects.
Duncaster is governed by a Board of Directors and employs 286 full- and part-time staff, 86 of whom currently live in Bloomfield. In addition to serving as one of the town’s major employers, Duncaster is committed to being a socially accountable member of the Bloomfield community. As a result, Duncaster’s Community Outreach Committee oversees contributions totaling some $10,000 annually to town agencies and
community organizations, such as:
• Food Bank
• Meals on Wheels
• Flu Clinic
• Library
• Blood Bank
• Volunteer Ambulance
• Access TV
• Concerts on the Green
Duncaster residents are also very involved with the Bloomfield Schools through such projects as:
• Bloomfield High School’s music program and WWII history projects
• Carmen Arace Middle School’s “Tell Me A Story” project
• J.P. Vincent Elementary School’s “Pen Pal” project, which was begun by Duncaster residents in 1998
• Donating to the Bloomfield Education Foundation
On a more global level, Duncaster is an active green community. Efforts have included:
• Cutting energy usage in the community, resulting in residents being honored by the United States’ Energy Star Award
• Using a cogeneration plant on site to produce 40 percent of the community’s energy needs
• Driving a hybrid car to bring residents to appointments and on trips outside the community
Duncaster regularly opens its doors to provide services and information to those in the area. Among these efforts are:
• Free public educational presentations on topics such as fitness for older adults, the power of positive thinking, and downsizing a home for freedom and the needs of retirement
• Access to Duncaster’s Aquatics & Fitness Center
• Use of the community’s facilities for non-profit organizations’ meetings
• Access to Duncaster’s on-site primary care clinic managed by Hartford Hospital
• Community breakfasts
