Duncaster Participates in the Global Campaign, “Brain Awareness Week”

Duncaster CCRC - Thursday, April 04, 2013

BLOOMFIELD, April 4, 2013- Residents and Staff of the Duncaster Retirement Community did their part in the global campaign to increase awareness of the benefits of brain research.

The global campaign, Brain Awareness Week, took place March 11-15 and included various lectures and programs. This was Duncaster’s second year participating in the global event and Duncaster resident and founder of the ThinkWell Center, Louise Loomis, headed the program.

Sessions included lectures on aging well by Robert McCartney M.D. and, from guest speaker Ken Steller, “The Keys to Cognitive Fitness”. In addition to residents and guests, staff and board members also took the opportunity to challenge their minds during the week’s affairs.  Duncaster’s chef, Frank Zimber, also highlighted special ingredients in menu items, “brain super-foods” such as walnuts, beets, garlic and avocados, in support of brain awareness week.

The overall week was very successful with even more participants than the first year we ran it,” said Loomis. “Participants who attended the numerous lectures and programs commented that they learned a lot and had fun doing it.  I heard one participant say ‘My brain is terrific! It has lots of possibilities.’”

Brain Awareness Week is sponsored by The Dana Foundation and takes place every March. It aims to unite the efforts of partner organizations, such as Duncaster, in raising awareness about brain research and the progress that has recently been made. The Dana Foundation provides free a collection of useful materials such as booklets, pencils with brain shaped erasers, and puzzles on their website: www.dana.org.
