First Monthly Get Up! Fall Awareness Workshop Mar. 28

Duncaster CCRC - Tuesday, March 06, 2018

BLOOMFIELD, CT, Mar. 1, 2018 -- A new monthly series of public workshops on ways to deal with the hazards of falling will be held starting March 28. The workshops, called “Get Up! Fall Awareness” will help older adults adapt their surroundings to prevent falls and teach how to recover in the event that they occur. The workshops will be held at the Duncaster Aquatic and Fitness Center on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 1:00 p.m. The workshops are open to the public but pre-registration is required.

Contemplative Older Adult“Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls threaten the safety and independence of older adults, but they don’t have to,” says Lucy Eyre, the Wellness and Fitness Coordinator at the Duncaster Aquatic and Fitness Center. Lucy is a Senior Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer who will be one of the instructors in the workshops. Fitness Trainer John Hoadley and Physical Therapist Lauri McCrorey will join her in demonstrating and teaching practical strategies for preventing and dealing with falls. Participants will actually practice these strategies with the help of the trainers staffing the workshop.

The trainers will teach and demonstrate such things as:

  • Fall awareness and fall-proofing your home
  • How to fall
  • How to know if you’re injured and when to call for help
  • How use items in your home to right yourself after a fall
  • How to right yourself when there’s no nearby support.

The workshops will be held monthly on the following dates: March 28, April 25, May 23, June 27, July 25, August 22, September 26, October 24 and November 28.

The $10 registration fee for the workshop also provides full access to the Duncaster Aquatic and Fitness Center, including use of the gym, pool, all classes and spa facilities.

Duncaster’s Aquatic and Fitness Center is the area’s only 50+ fitness center that offers membership to the public. All facilities and classes are customized for those ages 50 or better with a focus on fitness to keep members independent and moving freely. The Olympic sized, adults- only pool allows those 50+ to exercise or swim at their own pace and on their own schedules. There are individual and family memberships available which include access to any of the 28 classes offered weekly.
