New Rehab Program at Duncaster Expects to Get Patients on Their Feet Faster and Stronger

Duncaster CCRC - Tuesday, September 08, 2015

BLOOMFIELD, CT, Sept. 9, 2015 -- A new program at Duncaster’s Caleb Hitchcock Healthcare Center is the first in the area to offer a unique approach to rehabilitation that gets them home quicker and stronger. The key to this new program is specialized rehabilitation training for both nurses and the aids that allows them to support the patients throughout the day.

All Registered Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants who work in Duncaster’s short-term rehab neighborhood have been undergoing new rehab certification training. The nurses are becoming Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses and the assistants are becoming Rehab Restorative Assistants as a result of specialized professional training.

“This program is on the leading edge of a national effort to build healthcare support teams around every patient that include highly skilled professionals and the patient themselves,” says LaShawn Wilcoxson, Director of Clinical Services at Caleb Hitchcock Healthcare Center, which is Duncaster’s skilled nursing neighborhood. “The idea is ultimately to decrease the length of time that people are out of their homes for a rehab stay. By involving rehab specialists, nurses, aids and the patients in the process, rehab becomes a continuous part of the patient’s day.

In the past, and in fact in most centers today, patients have rehab sessions once or twice a day and commonly only five days per week. The rest of the time they are recuperating, but not actively getting better. A key part of this continuous rehab is the training Duncaster nurses and aids get to become Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses and Rehab Restorative Assistants. With that, they become an extension of a patient’s rehab therapy, working with them throughout each day to get them back to their lives sooner.” Duncaster also has a long-standing history of providing rehab sessions seven days a week.

Duncaster is the only skilled nursing center in the area to offer this approach to its rehab patients. These levels of rehab certification - both for nurses and aids- are rare, not only in retirement communities but also at free-standing skilled nursing centers. “These changes make Duncaster’s rehab program comparable to those offered in many hospitals. We’re proud to be pioneers of this approach in this area,” says Duncaster President and CEO Michael A. O’Brien. “Duncaster’s new program follows a national healthcare initiative toward getting people back home and stronger faster. The goal is that they don’t have to be readmitted to nursing centers for unresolved issues that crop up after they’ve returned home.”

Duncaster’s Director of Clinical Services echoes that sentiment when she outlines where Duncaster’s rehab program is going, “Our vision is for patients to come here, be happy, be involved in their care and ultimately get well faster. The patients are here for a purpose, not just to convalesce. That purpose is getting better. This new program makes them partners in doing just that.”
